The idea behind that technique is to balance first/middle name with last name of different popularity levels.

Today, I’ll add another technique you can use in order to create a good combination of first name, middle name and/or parents name. We’ll be using the structure of the full name.

Here is how you can do it…

The structure of the full name is about the characters’ total count and how it’s distributed along the first name and middle name if any.

Confused? …Here is an example:

The name “Gino Ferrari” is 11-character long. The first name is 4-character long and the last name is 7-character long. The “balance by structure” technique is about choosing a first name of the ideal characters count related to the last name.

Yes, I’ve found that certain names make a good and fluent combination with parents name only based on their characters counts.

In fact, “Gino Ferrari” makes a good structure.

On the other hand, “Salvatorio Trappatoni” doesn’t make it so well because both firstname and lastname are relatively and almost equally long. That breaks the structure rule.

In a nutshell, the formula is:

Short first name for a long surname.
Long first name for a short surname.

Now, you’re ready to take it to the next level. Instead of the characters’ count, let’s rather take the syllables’ count into consideration. This is more accurate.

Note:

Keep in mind that those are the number of syllables and not only the characters.

Important note:

This formula is not written on stone, you can shorten or lengthen the first name by one character if you want. But it gives you a starting point for getting the full name with a good structure.

The beauty of this simple formula is that you can already rule out thousands of names. Thus, saving you much time for the good and fluent names

There are pros and cons to nick names and many parents are torn in how they feel about them.

There are some names which are very commonly called by nicknames instead. Names such as Christopher shortened to Chris or Joseph shortened to Joe are common. One downside to this is that some people don’t want to be called by these common nick names and have to constantly ask people to call them by their full name instead.

Another con to this is if people make up nick names the baby doesn’t like, such as calling a Robert “Bobby” in his toddler years and when he’s older, he doesn’t like the nick name.

Here are a few examples of names without nick names:

• Casey
• Asia
• Ashton
• Lauren
• Jamie
• Aaron
• Alan
• Emery
• Felicity
• Tara
• Talia
• Dallas
• Lyle
• Ryan

When you use these names, your baby won’t have to worry about being called some nick name they don’t like for the rest of their lives. Of course there are always rare exceptions where someone will try to take a name without nicks and give it one such as calling a Ryan “Ry” but there isn’t much you can do to prevent this.

Now here are a few examples of names you didn’t expect that have nick names:

• Aileen can be Allie or Lena
• Cornelia can be Nelle, Nelly or Nelia
• Emeline can be Emma, Emily,
• Emmy, Millie or Em
• Melissa can be Lisa,
• Lissa, Mel, Milly or Missy
• Alexandra can be Alex, Alla or Sandy
• Augustus can be August, Austin or Gus
• Elwood can be Woody
• Josiah can be Joe or Si
• Morris can be Morrie
• Chester can be Chet
• Lucas can be Luke or Lu

These are just a few examples of baby names with nick names that you may not have known about. In our ever-increasingly informal society, many parents are opting for casual baby nick names instead of their longer, original form on birth certificates. The only problem with this is that it never gives your child the opportunity to choose a more grown-up name and in a way, it forces them to stay a baby forever.

Popular opinion in the baby name industry is that it’s better to give your baby a longer name that can have a cutesy nick name than to give them the cutesy nick name on their birth certificate to have them one day outgrow it and not appreciate the fact that they are missing a mature alternative.

Now that you know more about baby nick names and the pros and cons of using them, you can make a decision about whether or not you want to use them with your child. One option you have is to give your baby a name that can be shortened to a nick name later in life if they decide they want to.

You don’t have to. You can get the best of both worlds.

You can achieve just that with name’s balance. You create balance in the full name when you combine different ranges of popularity between either:

• First name and middle name,
• or between first name and the last name.

Please let me explain.

For this first example, you can choose an old popular name with a trendy middle name. e.g. “Paul Gage” ; “Nancy Grace”

Second example, if you have a common family name, you can have a more individual first name. e.g. “Cade Rodriguez” ; “Angelina Lee”

See what we did there?

Now, let’s assume your surname (last name) is not an easy one What first name will make the full name well-balanced?

Yes, it’s an easy first name. e.g. “John Minkowski” ; “Sarah Staffenberger”

The bottom line is: don’t hesitate to combine first names, middle names and last names of different popularity ranks.

The goal is to give balance to the full name.

Side note:

There are other ways to create balance other than mixing popularity ranks. It’s about balance by structure and origins.

Are they asking for approval?

I don’t know. But one thing is for sure: You cannot please all the people all the time. Because this is the kind of questions that makes the process to find a baby name more difficult than it needs to be. Think about it. There will always be people who will like the name you choose, and others who will not.

Should you simply stop asking for outside opinions? And consider the only ones whose opinions really matter are you and your partner?

I think outside voices can be useful if you’re not merely seeking for rebuttal or agreement. But to brainstorm fresh ideas.
