“What was the baby's name?”
-- Paul Morrison
Nick names can be a sneaky issue for many parents.
In fact, while nick names can be nice and cute short names for a little girl/boy. But new nick names can also be created by other people later in the teen's life in an unpredictable way.
There are pros and cons to nick names and many parents don't know whether to use them or avoid them.
There is an easy-to-use software to check whether a name has a horrible association based on sound symbolism - clichés and subconscious suggestions that other people may have.

There are common names which are called by nicknames instead. e.g. Names such as Susan shortened to Sue or Robert shortened to Bob are common. The downside to this comes up when some people don't want to be called by these nick names and have to ask people to call them by their full name instead over and over again.
The sneaky con to this is if people make up nick names the person doesn't like, such as calling a Patrick 'Pat' in his youth years and when he's older, he doesn't like the nick name anymore. It can get annoying, really.
I've gathered a list of names without nick names. If you find more of them, let me know:
With one of those names, your baby won't have to worry about being called some nick name they don't like for the rest of their lives. But keep in mind that there are no thing such as nicknames bullet-proof. Because there can be someone with wild imagination to try and call up a Aaron 'Ari' . Go figure. But don't worry, there isn't much you can do to prevent this.
Along the process of picking those names on the list above, I had to rule out a few names which I thought to be without nick names. Thanks to my friend for pointing them out. So here are a few examples of names you didn't expect that have (sneaky) nick names:
Common belief in the baby name industry is that it's a good thing to give your baby a longer name that can have a cutesy nick name than to give them the cutesy nick name on their birth certificate to have them one day outgrow it and not appreciate the fact that they are missing a mature alternative. It's a good practice because it allows names for alternatives. It's always good to choose.
I hope this article helped you to know more about baby nick names and opened an eye to the pros and cons of using them. You can make a wiser decision about whether or not to use them with your child.
The bottom line is to give your baby a name that can be shortened to a nick name later in life if they decide they want to. Make an informed choice and forget about the unpredictable.
There will be a follow-up to this article.
Peace.
